TRAVEL TIPS

Flights

We want everyone to enjoy Scopello and Sicily as much as we do, so here are some tips for smooth travel…

Fly into Palermo (PMO) or Trapani (TPS), either one will put you about 40 minutes from Scopello.

For those traveling from outside of Europe, we recommend connecting through Rome or Milan (or any other major European hubs) that have many daily flights direct to Trapani or Palermo. Booking these legs separately is usually less expensive.

Getting Around

A shuttle service from Palermo/Trapani to Scopello is available for booking. However, we recommend renting a car at the airport for day trips and exploring this part of Sicily, as public transportation is limited.

If you wish to book the private shuttle for an airport transfer, email Enrico at info@scopelloshuttle.it: 70 Euros from Palermo airport, 80 Euros from Trapani (up to 3 ppl).

Enrico is also able to provide car rentals upon request, otherwise we suggest booking directly through regular car agencies available at Palermo or Trapani airport.

The driving from both airports, around Castellemare del Golfo, Trapani, and Erice is very simple… But we would caution you away from driving into the city of Palermo unless you feel quite comfortable driving in foreign/chaotic traffic conditions.

For the wedding & reception , there will be a shuttle service to bring guests from Scopello to the Tonnara. At the end of the night, more shuttles will bring guests back to Scopello centro or can take you directly to your accommodations in the area.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We encourage everyone to stay within the little town of Scopello for at least the 25th and 26th, for convenience. It is such a small town that everything on here will be walking distance to the beach, the Tonnara (although maybe not in heels), and the borgo where most of the cafes and restaurants are.

Tonnara di Scopello

Tonnara di Scopello

The wedding venue Tonnara di Scopello has 15 very lovely apartamentos inside the renovated 15th century buildings, and these will be available for guests to book for the nights of the 25th and 26th only. Each apartment is unique and some can sleep between 2-4 people–all with windows overlooking the sea and with private beach access. To book, please reach out to shannonshane2024@gmail.com and our coordinator or us will provide you with the room catalogue and rates. Available on a first come, first-served basis.

Locanda Mazzara Vito

Locanda Mazzara Vito

Vito’s place! Vito has a beautiful property and orchard with guest rooms right in town. Nearly every room has a kitchenette and a little patio with a view of the sea, and you will be within walking distance to our venue, the Tonnara. The rooms are rustic, no breakfast or coffee and there might be geckos in your room–but we had one of the most relaxing stays EVER here. He is very old school, to make a booking you can text him on WhatsApp and you’ll pay in cash upon arrival. Limited wifi.

Hotel La Tavernetta

Hotel La Tavernetta

Also right in town, and most rooms have sea views. This is the “big hotel” of the town, so it has amenities like a front desk, breakfast service, and a swimming pool surrounded by a nice garden. You will find very helpful english-speaking staff here, and there is a good restaurant on the bottom floor.

VRBO, AirBnB

VRBO, AirBnB

There are quite a few rental villas in the area! Most of them would give you a slightly longer walk into town, but great for a longer stay. If you find a place please feel free to send it our way and we can tell you if it’s well situated!

B&B Tre Giummare

B&B Tre Giummare

This is not walking distance to the venue! It’s a very pretty B&B that is perched up on the hill. Still it’s a great choice if you are looking to use Scopello area as your home base for a longer stay.

Pensione Tranchina

Pensione Tranchina

Really lovely, small Pensione right in town. Directly across from the Hotel and Vito’s place, also has a great restaurant downstairs.

Case di Calamazzo

A little group of very cheery apartment style rooms, perfect if you want to literally roll out of bed onto the beach! Less than a mile to walk to town and the venue. Can book through their website or Booking.com etc.

BEACH GUIDE

A few options nearby. Walking distance from Scopello there is Cala Mazzo di Sciacca. This is a rocky beach that is great for swimming and snorkeling, and has a beach bar/snack hut that rents beach chairs from (or you can go without) It’s a very nice place to go to early in the morning when the water is like glass and there’s no one around.

Also walking distance, but a bit further is the Riserva dello Zingaro, a nature reserve that has beautiful coastal trails leading to several hidden cove beaches. You’ll need to bring your own everything (chairs, food/drink) and there’s not a ton of shade. 5 Euro entrance fee to the reserve.

Spiaggia di Guidaloca is the local sandy beach, with plenty of parking, spritz bars, chair/umbrella rentals. Great for swimming, and on calm days good clarity for snorkeling.

DO A BOAT DAY...

Docked in the marina at San Vito lo Capo, the Hippocampus boat can fit up to 12 people. Susan and Mauro captain the excursions, and are very lovely hosts. https://www.hippocampus-sanvito.it/

Vito Gioia is a local winemaker and sailor who has combined his two passions to offer wine-tastings on his sailboat. He also does longer charters f you are inclined to sleep on a boat… Just ask him! vitogioiamail@gmail.com

Plenty of other charters can be found, either leaving from the marina in Castellemare del Golfo or San Vito lo Capo.

EXPLORE THE LOCAL TOWNS & CITIES

Definitely the most unique & picturesque would be Erice. It’s a walled city located at the top of Mount Erice, but a short drive from Scopello. Erice is known for for ceramic production… great place to walk around, have lunch, admire the ceramics.

The port town of Castellemare del Golfo is even closer to Scopello, but larger and with more going on. Great fish restaurants right on the marina.

Palermo is the big one and it is awesome. Totally worth spending at least a day or two wandering around this lively city. As mentioned, driving in Palermo can be pretty kooky but it is doable... If you do drive in, we have found it’s convenient to park on Foro Italico Umberto or Via Lincoln (near the Orto Botanico).

Visit the Temple of Segesta: about a 30 minute drive from Scopello, the Segesta is an extremely well preserved Doric temple thought to have been built by the Elymian people sometime around 400 BC.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK...

On Monday the 23rd our good friend and talented Chef, Corina Weibel is organizing a lunch for up to 20 of our friends. The location is her beautiful home, a restored farmhouse in the hills above Trapani, with views of the Islands. The menu will be inspired by lovely seasonal Sicilian ingredients. Contact her to reserve a spot: corinainla@gmail.com

Market Scopello: the closest grocery store (with a deli counter, beach supplies, wine/beer, etc). Pharmacy is right next door.

Nettuno: in the Baglio of Scopello, might be the best of those restaurants–they are all doing very typical Sicilian pasta and seafood dishes.

Chiringuito: pizza restaurant and very fun/casual outdoor bar in the same yard. The pizza is quite good.

Scopello Pane Cunzatu: delicious bakery right in town that specializes in a Sicillian style sandwich, a tomato-covered bread called sfincione, and arancine.

Frutti di Mare “il Chiosco”: Hopefully we are not overselling this place when I say it was one of our favorite meals of all time… Go for lunch or for sunset dinner, it’s a tiny rustic casual dining patio overlooking the sea. Order the local frutti di mare (served raw), and definitely some steamed mussels and clams. Sip extremely cold white wine. Repeat. They have funny hours, you kinda just have to stop by and try your luck… Looks like a shack from the outside, very close to Trapani.

Gli Archi di San Carlo: really great place to have Sicilian pastas in the town of Erice.

While gifts are appreciated, please know that your presence in our lives is gift enough!

We have included a registry along with a donation link to one of our favorite charities in San Francisco.

You may have noticed a typo on our mailed invitation... Oops! Please note that the rehearsal luncheon and welcome swim will occur on WEDNESDAY September 25th, followed by the wedding on Thursday the 26th.

Please note that the wedding venue has historically accurate cobblestone flooring. We would advise against wearing heels with small/pointy heels, as you might find yourself very unstable! Block heels seem to be just fine.

Avoid camera tickets! Like most Italian towns, Scopello has a town center "Centro Storico" that is designated for special permit drivers only--you'll see a sign for where the zone begins. If you drive your rental car into the town center you may receive a ticket in the mail a few months later... You can avoid this easily by parking at one of the two large parking lots on the way into town, about a 50 meter walk away.
